Choosing Wisely

CAEP Choosing Wisely Working Group
Top 10 Recommendations

CAEP is proud to be part of the Choosing Wisely Canada campaign. The goal of the campaign is to help clinicians and patients engage in conversations about unnecessary tests and treatments and make smart and effective choices to ensure high-quality care. The list developed by the CAEP Choosing Wisely Working Group will help clinicians and patients engage in conversations about unnecessary tests, treatments and procedures, and support clinician efforts to help patients make smart and effective choices to ensure high-quality care.

The CAEP Choosing Wisely Canada (CWC) Committee would like to catalogue the efforts of CAEP members undertaking implementation of CWC interventions across Canada. The information collected will become part of an ongoing effort to share successes (and failures) across diverse EDs and to promote implementation efforts in Canada. This database will also enable individuals/groups workng on CWC local implementation projects to connect and share ideas. Thank you for your participation in the development of this database.

About the CAEP EM Choosing Wisely campaign:

The CAEP EM Choosing Wisely Committee is made up of an expert group of EM Physicians that created the lists based on the latest evidence, expert opinions and research, and in consultation with more than 100 Canadian EM physicians from coast to coast. CAEP brings valuable expertise and focus on emergency medicine care to the campaign as well as a trusted voice in reaching our 2400+ members, and in turn, their patients.

The group is co-chaired by Dr. Brian Rowe, Emergency Physician, Department of Emergency Medicine, University of Alberta, Edmonton, AB and Dr. Amy Cheng, Emergency Physician, Assistant Professor, Division of Emergency Medicine, Department of Medicine, University of Toronto, Toronto, ON.

In June 2015, CAEP released the first five recommendations and in response to great feedback released an additional 5 recommendations in October 2016. The full list was released through a nationwide press release in partnership with Choosing Wisely Canada. The lists are available in PDF version in both French and English.
